ARTIST STATEMENT

The artwork is influenced by works of greek and roman sculpture to the painters of the Italian renaissance. There is also an influence of Caravaggio and Velasquez to the figurative works of Modigliani, Sargent, Klimt, and Nerdrum. In an attempt to continue the representation of the figure I deal with the elimination of excess and to seek a truth. A truth of representation and beauty but also to capture the simplicity of a moment, seeing the truth of a reality. In some of the paintings I have tried to capture a mood to express an emotion, similar to the way you would feel in seeing an operatic aria being performed, where the character is revealing its innermost thoughts and feelings, usually when they are alone. An Isolation of a moment but also the isolation of the object in its relation ship to its reality. There is also an influence of the concept of string theory with regard to the square non representational shapes. The concept that matter in its smallest form is composed of vibrating strings on a grid like fabric of space, defining a direct relationship between matter and form and ultimately the object itself (The Figure).

Michael Delaney is also studying as an operatic tenor. Music has had a tremendous impact on his life and art and he often sees unification between the two art forms.
